Tantalizing Tuesday (5) The Mask of Love

Welcome to Tantalizing Tuesday, where a group of us Author types get together and write you a 200 word story based on a picture of our choosing. When I saw this picture I immediately knew I would write a flash about it. I know it’s not February, but… This week, I chose:

Original Written Work by ER Pierce ©2012

Photo/Art by the amazing WinterWolf

Cordelia lifted the mask she faithfully wore, her duty to those she loved, and stared into their hope filled faces. She absorbed their pain and frantic energy, slowly, one by one.

She turned her face upwards, closing her eyes and allowed her heart to act as a cleansing conduit. The sorrow, anger, turmoil, and rapidly rolling emotions ebbed and flowed as she consumed their darkness, then filtered light, love and laughter in its place.

She lowered her head and opened her eyes, freneticism coursing through her bleeding veins.

She stepped to her left and held her Sol’s gaze and said, “Nothing you become will ever disappoint me, you are perfect as you are.”

She turned and walked a few feet and stared into the Moons eyes and said, “Love will always protect you and keep you safe, even from yourself.”

Cordelia spun and raised her arms to the field of flowers basking in her wake and said, “Allow yourselves to be discovered. Don’t hide from the rain.”

As their souls were lifted, and their burdens relieved, they walked away lighter and free.

And no one was there when Cordelia stumbled and fell to her knees, sobbing into the earth.

Alone, with nothing but their pain in her heart.

I'm a mother, a wife, a reader, reviewer and a writer. I eat lots of chocolate, drink lots of ice coffee, and swear like a trucker with road rage. I'm a Virgo -- and I'm sometimes too honest. I can be over-emotional, and a tad crazy. You've been warned.

  7. Penny says:

What an amazing and self-sacrificing magic she possesses! To absorb others pain and fears is equal in parts both an incredible gift to her loved ones and burden to bear for her soul. This was a rich and deeply touching post, ER. Thank you for sharing.

    • ERP ERP says:

Thank you for reading, Penny. I appreciate your kind words, and you understood the emotions I was eluding to. Excellent.

  8. I am always emotionally touched by just about everything ER writes, with one notable exception( she knows which one ). Penny captured what I wanted to say beautifully and there isn’t much more I can add. I can relate to Cordelia on so many levels, to be empathic is draining and often there isn’t anything left for yourself. Thank You ER for another great flash. (( Hugs ))

  9. Gemma Parkes says:

Beautiful and emotive, l was really caught up in the story, poor Cordelia, isn’t she like women the world over, though obviously on a much grander scale.

  10. Lee Brazil says:

    Powerful, well done :)

  11. Muffy Wilson says:

Painful and hardly oblique. What sacrafice this love for our minions? What love we sacrifice of ourselves for those we follow and lead? I loved this piece, truly, and the photo is supurb, just awe inspiring work, ER:) xo

    • ERP ERP says:

  14. CJM says:

    Magical, just magical! Fabulous Teaser!

  15. Very nice. Very, very nice. Did I mention this was nice? I am utterly teased, here! I completely want to read the next twenty chapters!

  16. Sherry Palmer says:

That was both painful and beautiful to read. You have a magic way with words. I know that feeling well, being the “fixer” in my family and the one friends come to with their problems. I absorb everything around and then just lay down and cry it all out…it is the only way to survive it. I love your written and am in Awe of all you do, lady.

  17. A hauntingly beautiful piece. I love the way it flows and it’s mysterious while very telling at the same time. Gave me a much needed smile today.

  18. Truly beautiful. I think you captured the photo so well.
